Buying a Barrel Sauna: Wood, Heaters & What to Consider

Choosing to buy a barrel sauna means opting for the most iconic form of garden sauna: round, compact, and quick to heat. However, the market in 2026 can be confusing – ranging from kits with 28mm walls to premium models made of Nordic spruce or thermowood. In this guide, you will learn what really matters regarding wood, heaters, and value, so your sauna doesn't become a frustration after just two winters.

Why choose a barrel sauna?

The round shape is not just a design feature. In a barrel, there are no cold corners; hot air circulates evenly, and the volume is small relative to the seating area. This means shorter heating times and less energy per session than a cube of the same size. Additionally, a barrel sauna stands on two supports and only requires a level, stable foundation – paving slabs or a strip foundation are usually sufficient.

Those who prefer a more angular look will find the rounded cube shape (such as our R-UKU 160) an alternative with more headroom at the sides. Both designs use the same wall thickness and heaters – the choice is primarily a matter of taste and space.

1. The Wood: Spruce, Thermowood, and Wall Thickness

Nordic Spruce

Nordic spruce grows slowly, has tight annual rings, and is therefore denser and more dimensionally stable than fast-growing wood from Central Europe. It is the standard for high-quality barrel saunas: light-coloured, low-resin in the selection for the interior, and the most sensible base in terms of price. With an exterior glaze or oil, it lasts for many years.

Thermowood (Thermo Pine)

Thermally treated wood is modified at around 200°C without chemicals. It absorbs significantly less water, hardly warps, and acquires a dark, elegant colour. For regions with a lot of rain or for anyone who wants minimal maintenance, thermowood is the more durable choice.

Wall thickness: the most important figure in the data sheet

  • Under 38 mm: budget kits, high heat loss in winter, heater runs longer.
  • 40–45 mm: Premium standard for year-round operation in Europe. Our barrel saunas and cube models feature 42 mm thick walls.
  • Roofing: Bitumen shingles are mandatory if the sauna is not under a roof. Bare wood on the curved arch will not last five years.

Also, look for stainless steel tension bands, a door made of 8 mm safety glass with a wooden frame, and two-level benches – the lower platform is more comfortable for warming up in winter.

2. The Heater: Electric or Wood-burning?

The heater determines how you will use your sauna. We exclusively install heaters from Harvia, the Finnish market leader – in three variants:

  • Harvia KIP 4.5 kW (Standard): Electric heater that also runs on a single-phase 230V connection. Ideal if there is no three-phase power in the garden. Heating time for a 130cm barrel sauna: around 40–50 minutes.
  • Harvia Spirit SP60 WiFi (Smart): 6 kW, controlled via app. You preheat from your sofa and step into a ready sauna.
  • Harvia Legend 240 GreenFlame (Wood): Wood-burning heater with a complete chimney set. No electricity required, providing the classic sauna experience with crackling wood and soft steam – though it takes about 20 minutes longer to heat and requires regular cleaning.

A detailed comparison can be found in our guide Garden sauna with wood-burning heater. In short: electric for convenience and daily use, wood for atmosphere and independence from the grid.

3. What does a barrel sauna really cost in 2026?

The following configurations are available for the AURA 130 barrel sauna – diameter 200 cm, length 130 cm, space for 3–4 people:

  • AURA 130, Nordic spruce, glass door, without heater
  • AURA 130 with Harvia KIP 4.5 kW
  • AURA 130 in thermo pine, without heater
  • AURA 130 with full glass front, spruce, without heater
  • AURA 130 with wood-burning heater Harvia Legend 240 incl. chimney

The slightly longer cube variant R-UKU 160 (Ø 210 × 160 cm, 42 mm wall) is also available. All models are supplied as a kit made of prefabricated thermowood elements for self-assembly – two people can complete the assembly in one day. Delivery across the EU and the UK, lead time 3–5 weeks, two-year manufacturer's warranty. Financing options available.

Budget additionally for the foundation, the electrical connection by a qualified professional (for electric heaters), and approximately 20 kg of sauna stones – which we include free of charge when you purchase a heater.

4. Permits, Location, Neighbours

Small garden saunas are often exempt from planning permission up to a certain size, but limits and boundary distances vary depending on local regulations. A quick call to your local planning office before ordering saves trouble. For wood-burning heaters, additional regulations regarding chimneys and smoke may apply. Plan the location so the glass door faces the garden or water – a view from the sauna is what owners value most after purchase.

What research says about regular sauna use

A barrel sauna is more than just wellness furniture. The Finnish KIHD cohort study by Jari Laukkanen observed over 2,300 men for around 20 years and found a correlation between frequent sauna sessions (4–7 per week) and a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases – noting this is an association, not proof of causality. The review by Laukkanen & Kunutsor 2018 in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings summarises the data. A systematic evaluation of 40 studies with around 3,850 participants (Hussain & Cohen 2018) also describes positive effects on blood pressure, sleep, and well-being in healthy adults. Anyone with a heart condition should discuss sauna use with a doctor beforehand.

Checklist before buying

  1. Wall thickness at least 40 mm, bitumen shingles on the roof.
  2. Wood type suitable for your climate: Spruce (value) or Thermowood (low maintenance).
  3. Choose heater based on connection: 230V → KIP 4.5 kW; no power → wood-burning heater with chimney.
  4. Size according to people: 130 cm length for 3–4, 160 cm for more legroom.
  5. Check with local authorities regarding planning and wood-burning regulations.
  6. Confirm manufacturer's warranty, lead time, and assembly instructions in writing.
