Which sauna heater should you choose?

Which sauna heater should you choose? A practical guide for everyone.

The heater is the heart of every sauna—its task is to quickly and efficiently raise the temperature and maintain it at a level that ensures a comfortable and healthy session. The choice of heater has a huge impact not only on heating efficiency but also on the atmosphere, operating costs, and safety of use.

1. Types of furnaces - what you need to know

There are several main types of sauna heaters on the market, each with different advantages:

Electric heaters are the most popular solution for home and garden saunas. They are easy to install, control, and maintain. Thermostats and timers allow you to precisely set the temperature and operating time without the need for lighting or constant maintenance.

Wood-burning stoves are a classic solution that provides a traditional atmosphere and the characteristic aroma of a sauna. They produce very high temperatures but require access to a chimney, regular replenishment of wood, and more frequent maintenance.

Gas furnaces are less common, but they offer rapid heating and lower operating costs. However, they require a gas installation and appropriate safety measures.

Infrared heaters don't heat the air but radiate heat directly onto the body. This is a good solution if you want to enjoy the sauna at lower temperatures and avoid very hot air.

2. Selecting the furnace power - the most important rule

The basic rule when choosing a heater is to match its power to the sauna's volume. Generally, approximately 1 kW of heater power should be used for every 1 m³ of sauna volume. If the sauna has large windows, poor insulation, or a stone finish, it's worth increasing the heater's power by about 10-20% to achieve a stable temperature and rapid heating.

Example:

sauna with a capacity of 6 m³ → heater with a power of approx. 6 kW

sauna 8 m³ → stove approx. 8 kW

sauna larger than 10 m³ → stove 10 kW or more

3. Classic electric stoves - recommended models

Some popular electric heaters that work well in home and garden saunas:

Harvia Vega (e.g., BC45, BC60) – a series with built-in control knobs and various power outputs (4.5 kW and 6 kW) make it suitable for small and medium-sized saunas. A large stone capacity produces pleasant steam.

Harvia Cilindro – cylindrical heaters with a large stone count provide milder steam. Often chosen for medium-sized and larger saunas.

HUUM Drop / HUUM Hive – modern heaters with a large stone count, often with app control. They produce thick and smooth steam.

EOS, Tylo, Amerec – recognized brands offering electric furnaces from compact to very efficient, with various control options (mechanical, digital, remote).

4. Wood stoves - when is it worth choosing them?

Wood stoves provide high temperatures and the distinctive aroma of burning wood, creating a traditional sauna atmosphere. However, they require a chimney, good ventilation, and access to wood. Installation is more complicated than with electric stoves, but the sauna's effect and atmosphere are often worth the effort.

5. Gas stoves - efficient and economical

Gas heaters are characterized by rapid heating and lower operating costs, especially with intensive sauna use. They require a gas installation and appropriate safety measures, so it's best to consult a specialist before choosing one.

6. What else is worth remembering when choosing a stove?

Control – modern stoves offer electronic or app control, which provides greater convenience and precision of settings.
Number of stones – more stones produce milder steam and maintain the temperature longer.
Power Supply – More powerful electric furnaces (>6 kW) may require a three-phase power supply (400 V).
Safety – make sure the stove has the appropriate certifications and that installation has been carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Summary

Choosing a sauna heater should begin with determining the sauna type and its cubic capacity, then matching the heater's power and type to the user's expectations. Electric heaters are the most convenient and easiest to use, wood-burning heaters offer a traditional atmosphere, and gas heaters can be an economical alternative with proper installation. A properly selected heater guarantees comfortable sessions and many years of trouble-free use.
